iPads at DCS

iPads were introduced as an option for 1st years in September 2018. It has been a hugely successful initiative and in recent years, more and more students are electing to buy iPads for education purposes. In the school year 2021/2022 there were 3 iPad classes and 2 non-iPad classes.

How does it work?

Following the decision to use an iPad in class, parents buy the iPad online.

  1. The iPad is delivered to the schools and all of the apps that will be needed for educational purposes are loaded onto it.

  2. On starting 1st year, students will be given their iPad and have an induction session with our school IT technician.

  3. Their school books will be loaded onto the iPad, thus reducing the weight of their school bags.

  4. Students are taught how to use iPads and introduced to the various educational apps gradually during the first term.

Note: While the iPad remains the property of students, the school has control over the device in terms of all access to apps.

What are the benefits?

  1. The weight of the school bag is reduced.

  2. Students' iPad usage in school is monitored – how much time they spend on YouTube, Google Classroom, Explain Everything etc.

  3. All teachers use an iPad in teaching their subjects. Homework, class notes and subject feedback is communicated via Google Classroom which is more convenient for the iPad student to access.

  4. Students have a world of information at their fingertips which is very useful for subject research.

  5. Many educational apps such as Explain Everything and Simple Mind, are valuable learning and revision resources.

  6. During periods of home learning, working with the iPad is a natural progression.
