DCS Athletes best in Munster!

Douglas Community School athletes continued their outstanding Cross-Country season with some great individual and team performances at the Munster Schools Cross-Country Championships at Cork IT recently. The course proved to be a big hit with the athletes with plenty of fast running. First into action were the minor boys over 2000m where the DCS team had a superb team win with 29 points. The team had six athletes finish in the top 15 and easily won the team title. Jack O’ Mahony led the team home in a superb 3rd with other great runs from Liam Harris 5th, Kevin Horan 9th, Alan Horgan 12th, Jamie O’ Connell 13th and Luke Varian 15th. The junior boys raced over 3,500m and the race of the day came from Brendan Couch who eventually finished a superb 5th. Brendan has come into great form in recent weeks and continues to get stronger. Behind him the team battled hard with Daniel Mason, Fintan Cadogan, Paul Lehane and Eric O’ Neill all having good runs to get the team into 6th place. The intermediate boys team lined up in their 5000m with high hopes.  They produced the goods, winning the team title easily with 45 points.  The ‘B’ team came 3rd with 93 points. Mark Seacy had his best race to date finishing a superb 5th and with other great runs from Ian Tobin 12th, Emmet Bracken 13th, Andrew O’ Keeffe 15th and Jamie Sullivan 16th Douglas Community School had a great team win. Finally the senior boys’ race over 6000m proved to be a one-sided affair with Shane Quinn running away from the field. Patrick Coleman had a fine 2nd place, running on his own for the whole race. With great runs by Cullen Lynch 7th, Alan O’ Brien 11th and Brian Murray 15th DCS easily won this team title also. The team was without their 2nd scorer in Peter Hanrahan, but will have him back in action in two weeks time. Douglas Community School also had the added bonus of winning the best overall school cup for the 5th consecutive year.

Students Open DCS School Bank

Six fifth year students have recently opened a school bank.  The bank will be run by Jack Newton (Manager), Nikesh Chopra (assistant Manager), Conor Dowling (Auditor), Aidan Heffernan (Marketing), Gary Black (Teller) and Aaron Hurley (Teller) and is co-ordinated by Mr Alan White. The bank will be open every Friday from 1.00 – 1.30pm.  Since opening, the bank has been gaining momentum and we now have over 60 members after our first two weeks. This is a very positive response from the students. The service will be available to all students in the school and there are various incentives to opening an account such as €10 free call credit for every account opened. The bank will also be running competitions over the course of the year for students who regularly use the bank so watch this space!  Conor Dowling (pictured above) recently won a competition for a Nintendo wii. The competition was open to all students who interviewed for a position in the bank. The presentation of the prize was made before the Christmas break.

On 10 March the school bank regional finals will take place in the Sheraton Hotel in Fota.  Many schools around the county will be present and we will face some stiff opposition from more established banks.  However, we have a good team of students running our bank and we are hopeful that we will do well in this competition.  There are some great prizes on offer for successful teams such as iPods for students and vouchers for school supplies, so I know you will all join me in wishing the lads the best of luck in the competition.

Remember it is always a good idea to save a little each week – now more so than ever! So students, don’t forget to use the school bank regularly.
