BT Young Scientist

Douglas Community School has over many years been the highest performing and largest participating boys’ school from Cork in the BT Young Scientist Exhibition.  Participation in the early years was pioneered by Tom O’Hanlon and is now facilitated by Cian O’Mahony.  The BTYSE is Ireland’s largest and most prestigious second level schools’ exhibition.  It provides an ideal opportunity for students to extend their Science and Technology interest beyond the classroom.  Students are encouraged to follow their interests and use resources and contacts available to them to work hard to solve real world problems and immerse themselves in the wonderful world of Science, Medicine and Technology.

As an extracurricular activity, participation at a high level is a significant commitment on behalf of students and their parents but is rewarded every year with an exciting four day trip to the exhibition in Dublin.  Most years, students from DCS return with prizes including a recent Biological and Ecological category winner for a study into the use of sunflower pith as an alternative packaging and a number of awards in the Technology category.  More importantly, most students who participate eventually follow the science and engineering path at third level, with a significant understanding of scientific method and processes.

Students who are interested in developing a project should speak to Mr. O’Mahony in Room14 and come prepared for hard work!
