TY Students Step Back In Time At Charles Fort

TY students recently enjoyed an educational trip to Charles Fort and the town of Kinsale. The visit gave students the chance to learn about Irish history while exploring one of the country’s best-known historic sites.

Built in 1680 to protect Kinsale Harbour, Charles Fort impressed students with its huge stone walls, dry moat and old cannons. The tour guide explained what life was like for soldiers living there and shared stories that brought the fort’s history to life.

Students were especially surprised to learn about a nine-year-old “powder monkey” a young boy whose dangerous job was carrying gunpowder during battles. They also enjoyed hearing the famous ghost story of the White Lady, said to haunt the fort at night.

After the tour students spent time exploring the colourful streets and harbour of Kinsale. Overall, the trip was both enjoyable and memorable, giving students the opportunity to experience history beyond the classroom.
