Transition Year

The DCS Transition Year Programme Overview

Transition Year (TY) in Douglas Community School is a dedicated period for students to focus on personal growth, skills development and career exploration through experiential learning. The programme is aligned with The Department of Education TY Curriculum:

Core Goals and Curriculum

The programme is designed to foster a deep sense of personal awareness, ensuring students are confident in their identity and skilled in recognising their own abilities.

Students continue their core academic subjects while also sampling all available optional subjects. This structured exposure allows students to make well-informed decisions when selecting their subjects for the Leaving Certificate Programme.

Enrichment and Expansion

A wider world of learning is also opened up through TY-specific modules which include Enterprise, Financial Literacy, Conversational Polish, Road Safety, and many others. We have designed a programme that offers a wealth of opportunities to enrich their learning and broaden their perspective on who they are and what they want to achieve in life.

Experiential Learning and Skills Development

A variety of events and activities provide essential learning opportunities focused on collaboration and interpersonal skills:

  • Work Experience and Community Service

  • School Tours

  • Hillwalking (for Gaisce Awards)

  • Charitable Activities

  • Interactive Workshops

Programme Outcome

By the end of Transition Year, we aim for our students to be enriched, engaged, and competent learners. This empowers them to maximise their potential and continue on the path of lifelong learning.
