Follow Your Dream - Inspirational Visit From Past Pupil Daragh Cronin

DCS was privileged to welcome past pupil Darragh Cronin, class of 2021, who visited our TY class and inspired them with his adventure cycling the length of Africa. Darragh, with no cycling or camping experience, cycled through 19 countries, travelling 13428 km for 204 days in temperatures as high as 40 degrees and also below 0!! A proud Rockies man, he still managed to watch the All Ireland Hurling Final after reaching civilisation at the border of his final country, South Africa.

He fascinated our students with tales of his adventures and many mishaps along the way from mosquito bites to pirates to broken bikes and even a marriage proposal. Darragh overcame fatigue, climate, politics, war zones, language barriers, robbery, homesickness and loneliness. His story highlighted his strength of character, sheer resilience and good sense of humour.

His dream is to be the first Irish person to cycle unsupported from Blackrock to the base camp of Mt Everest, a total of roughly 12500km!! He hopes to, potentially, cycle through 21 countries crossing through barren deserts, through the Middle East and over vast mountain ranges in Europe and Nepal.

Darragh is raising money for the Children’s Unit in CUH to help those children follow their dreams, just like Darragh did….. to show that the ordinary can do the extraordinary.
