Douglas Community School claimed a thrilling victory in the Under 14D final against Gaelcholáiste Charraig Uí Leighin, emerging winners by two points after a fiercely contested game.
Played in Douglas GAA, the match was backed by fantastic support from our students, creating a great atmosphere throughout. The team found themselves under early pressure but showed resilience to settle into the game. Two crucial first-half goals from the fantastic Tomás Harrington and Jamie King helped swing momentum in our favour. Joe Gleeson was particularly influential, putting in a storming performance from half back and kicking two excellent points to edge his side into the lead.
At halftime, Douglas Community School led 2-2 to 0-6.
The second half began with Gaelcholáiste Charraig Uí Leighin making a strong emergence with a goal of their own. 5 mins later in perfect fashion, James Roche followed up a shot across the goal from second half substitute Billy O’ Reilly to kick it into the back of the net… Advantage Douglas again. Soon after, Dylan Murnane made a penetrating run from midfield and played a lovely one two with Billy O’ Reilly to net our 4th Goal. However, Gaelcholáiste Charraig Uí Leighin responded strongly and battled their way back into the game with another goal, setting up a tense final 10 minutes.
As the game entered the closing stages Michael O’ Riordan sauntered up from corner back to kick an inspirational score to put us back up by 3 points. In the closing stages however it was captain William Downey who stepped up when it mattered most, scoring a crucial point to secure the win. The final score read 4-7 to 2-11.
A special mention must go to goalkeeper Seán O’Brien who delivered an outstanding performance throughout. Under intense late pressure, he showed great composure and made three superb saves as the opposition launched high balls into the square, ultimately ensuring victory for his team.
Captained by William Downey, this was a memorable, hard-fought but most importantly a sweet win for Douglas Community School.
