Safe Roads, Safe Choices: Garda Presentation to Senior Students

Gardaí Richard O’Kelly and Shane Coakley from the Roads Policing Unit in Ballincollig recently delivered a powerful and thought provoking presentation to our 4th and 5th Year students. At an age where many students are preparing to apply for their provisional licences, this timely session highlighted the serious responsibility that comes with sitting behind the wheel of a car.

Students were shown hard hitting, graphic videos illustrating the real-life consequences of road traffic collisions, particularly those caused by mobile phone use. To reinforce the message volunteers took part in the “Bouncing Ball Challenge,” where they attempted to bounce a ball while texting; a task that quickly proved impossible. The Gardaí’s message was clear and simple: Put your phone away while driving. It can wait.

Important guidance was also shared with our vulnerable e-bike and e-scooter users; use lights, wear high-visibility clothing and never speed.

We extend our thanks to both Gardaí for taking the time to deliver such vital advice. As they reminded students, even one small change in our behaviour can make a lifesaving difference. Their final message resonated strongly;

You decide on your speed; the physics decides whether you live or die.”
