Engaging Economics Visit To CSO
Last week 5th Year Economics class had the fantastic opportunity to visit the Central Statistics Office (CSO) in Mahon, Cork.
The visit enabled a fascinating insight into the world of data and the vital role the CSO plays in Irish society. Students learned that the CSO provides objective, impartial information that helps people to understand what is really happening in the country. One of the key messages from the visit was that official statistics help to challenge misinformation and “fake news” by presenting evidence-based facts.
For those interested in economics and statistics, the CSO website has an excellent education section. Students learned about the John Hooper Poster Prize, which encourages students to explore statistics creatively, as well as the Young Economist of the Year (YEOTY) competition. There are also dedicated Leaving Certificate resources to support students in their studies.
The visit was an engaging and insightful experience. It brought our students’ classroom learning to life and gave them a deeper appreciation of the importance of data in shaping society and supporting informed decision-making. Many thanks to the team at the CSO for taking the time to meet with our students and answer their questions so openly and enthusiastically.
