1st Year students, along with their tutors and 5th Year Mentors, travelled to Gougane Barra on Tuesday 26th September. The day began with an input from the Chairperson of the local Historical Society, Sean O Sullivan. Sean told us about St. Finbarr, the legends associated with him, and the development of Gougane Barra throughout the centuries. Ms. Barry-Murphy led the students in a prayer which began at the lake and included the Holy Well, the cells where the monks lived and concluded in the Oratory.
The hill walk began after a break for lunch. Led by Ms. O Callaghan and blessed with fine weather, the climb to the top of the mountain gave way to a magnificent view of the surrounding countryside. On the way down the mountain an encounter with wasps left a number of our group with sore reminders of the day. A donation of vinegar from a local café helped to ease the pain. Wasps apart, it was a most enjoyable day!
