First Year Cross-Country League Final
The final of the 2009 Douglas Community School First Year Cross-Country League was held on Friday, 18 September and there were some superb performances. Two athletes ran the 5th and 6th fastest ever times on the course. Winner of the “A” race, and new First Year Champion, was Jack O’Mahony, with Jamie O’Connell a fine second and Liam Harris third. The winner of the “B” race was Darragh Nugent. All in all, the league was a great success. With over 100 athletes taking part and with over 20 athletes showing up for the first training session, all bodes well for the future of Douglas Community School athletics.

First Year Cross Country League First Round
The first round of the Douglas Community School First Year Cross-Country League took place in the second week of September with each of the four first year classes tackling the 950m course. With over 90 students taking part, there were 40 places available for the ‘A’ Final.
In the NC1 race Colm Daly had a fine win with Bartlomniei Tczeciak second, and Ryan McCarthy third. In the NO1 race Darragh O’ Shaughnessy had a great win with Eoin O’ Riordan second and Peter Froggatt third. Jamie O’ Connell won the NT1 race in style with Alan Horgan second and Eric Fahy third. Finally in the NU1 race Jack O’ Mahony won with Liam Harris second and Kevin Horan third.
It proved to be a great day’s racing and introduced all the first year students to cross-country running . The school now has a very proud tradition in athletics having won the best overall school award at Munster level for the last five years and last year winning the All-Ireland Schools Under-17 Cross-Country team title. Many of these young first year students will become future stars and carry on that tradition.
